About This Event

Join Minnesota-based artist and illustrator Jena Holliday for an empowering and creative workshop that explores identity, girlhood, and self-expression. In this hands-on class, participants will begin by reflecting on their personal experiences through guided journaling inspired by the themes of the Girlhood (It's complicated) exhibit. Using this self-reflection as a foundation, Jena will lead attendees through the process of creating a self-portrait with a loose, expressive painting style. Workshop participants will have the option to incorporate collage materials, adding texture and layers to the artwork as they bring their identity to life on canvas.

This workshop is a journey of creative self-discovery—designed for women and girls 12 and up—where participants will connect with their own stories while exploring the complex layers of girlhood and womanhood.

Holiday is the founder of Spoonful of Faith, a creative studio that blends art, design, and inspiration to foster hope and joy. She has led workshops and conversations across the country to encourage creative growth and community-building through art. Known for her vibrant storytelling and deeply personal approach to creativity, Holiday is dedicated to making art accessible and transformative for all.

All materials will be provided, including canvases, paints, brushes, and collage supplies. Participants will also receive a custom-designed journal to take home, perfect for continuing your creative journey. No prior art experience is required—just bring an open heart and a willingness to explore your story through art.

Come for the program and stay for the Girlhood (it’s complicated) exhibit. Free Minnesota History Center admission and parking is available every Thursday from 4-8pm. To request an accommodation or for inquiries about accessibility, please contact engagement@mnhs.org.

This event is part of Black History, Black Voices: an initiative by the Minnesota Historical Society that centers Black narratives, history, and issues through ongoing programs, content, and resources created by members of Minnesota’s Black community.
